‘Healthcare is a complex dance between yourself and your healthcare team,’ says Dr Deed. ‘Communication and shared responsibilities are important to ensure that you get the best level of care and feel free to raise any concerns about your diabetes.’
Your action plan:
· Communicate your needs: Outline the kind of relationship you’d like to develop with your doctor. For example, you might want to feel encouraged to voice any concerns. ‘If they aren’t able to do that, ask to be referred to another health professional you can communicate with,’ says Dr Deed.
· Network with others: Ask other people with diabetes to recommend a GP, or use the web to search for doctors in your area. Online services such as yelp.com.au provide ratings and testimonials for local doctors. These ratings may help you choose one who’s right for you.
